Alloy 20 or carpenter 20, is an alloy of iron, chromium, and nickel. The alloy was developed targeting maximum resistance from acids especially sulfuric acid. This alloy offers excellent resistance from crevice, corrosion and also pitting in acidic environment. They also protect themselves from the attack of nitric acid, phosphoric acid. They also contain silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, manganese, carbon, and Molybdenum.
The alloy also contains an element name Niobium that offers stabilization of this alloy against intergranular corrosion. They have excellent mechanical properties and offers great strength. They are easy to fabricate. They were originally made for the purpose to keep the safety from acid attack but now it is also used in various other industries as well. They are also gaining popularity in the industries related to chemicals, foods, plastics and pharmaceutical industries. The alloy is also used in the making of heat exchangers, mixing tanks, metal cleaning, and also piping and pickling types of equipment.
The alloy is readily available in the form of sheets, plates, bars, wire mesh, and wires. They are excellent against general corrosion, resistance to chloride resistance cracking. They can be easily used in food and dye production, petrochemical industries, bubble caps, reactor vessels. They have to pass the stress test, intergranular test, corrosion test to prove their reliability. They come with all the documents related to its usability, weight, and material quality and their welding process reports.
