SMO 254 is a high quality of alloy of stainless steel. They are developed with prime use in the areas of seawater as they can protect themselves from the aggression of chloride salts. It contains carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorous, silicon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and many more elements.
They offer excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion and also from general corrosion. They are of higher strength than normal stainless steel. They also offer good weldability. Fabrication of the alloy is also easy and can easily be bending and easy machining is possible. Care should be taken in the case of abrasion with copper because it can crack. The rods, bars, and wire, wire mesh are used in areas of manufacturing of equipment for handling seawater. This device includes seawater cooling, cooling water pipes, ballast water systems, firefighting equipment and many more. They are also used in hydraulic and instrumentation tubing purposes. They are also used in areas in gas production, pulp bleaching equipment, tanks, and pipelines parts.

Testing consists of mechanical testing, hardness testing, chemical analysis, PMI testing, flattening test, micro, and major test, pitting resistance test, flaring test. Important documentation includes an invoice, packaging details with weight and number of units with the size. Fumigation certificates, material traceability records, quality Assurance plan, heat treatment chart, and material guarantee are also included.
